The Theatre Royal Newcastle, designed by John and Benjamin Green, was opened in February 1837. After a fire in 1899 the auditorium was completely reconstructed by Frank Matcham in 1901. The Grade I listed Theatre Royal remains one of the most historic, cultural landmarks in the north east of England. The theatre faces onto Grey Street with a symmetrical facade dominated by a portico of giant Corinthian columns projecting over the pavement.

Inside the auditorium consists of open tiers, split into stalls and cantilevered dress circle, upper circle and gallery. A bust of Shakespeare sits over the proscenium arch framed in alabaster and plaster.

The Theatre Royal has played host to the biggest names in dance, drama, music and comedy in its 175 year history. A 2011 restoration reinstated the full 19th century splendour of theatre architect Frank Matcham’s auditorium and sympathetically restored front of house.
